My co-worker, Bae Sang-Im invited me to join her and her daughter for the
Dinosaur Expo in nearby Goseong-gun. Numerous dinosaur fossils of all kinds have been discovered there, and the area has since capitalized on these discoveries with a
Disneyesque Dinosaur theme park.
The area in and around Goseong proved an excellent location for the discovery of dinosaur fossils and is particularly well known for dinosaur footprints. Every three years, a large temporary dinosaur exhibit is built to showcase fossils and fossilized footprints. Numerous other models and programs are geared toward educating the dozens of school groups that come around to the exposition every three years.
We had a fun time together. For a temporary expo, the event had an impressive array of fossils on display at the park, most of which I think are held at a nearby natural history museum. They also displayed a great collection of life size dinosaur models. Above, Sang Im's daughter is seen feeding a quarter to this T-Rex (don't feed the animals!). And here's me violating the rules as well, by feeding another predator.
We also watched a 3D film about dinosaurs, the likes of which I hadn't seen in years. The short program after the film, however, turned out to be quite juvenile, even for Sang Im's 12 year old daughter. A man in a T-rex costume (legs still visible) and two garishly florescent kidney bean shaped cartoon characters came out from behind a stage and handed out toys to lucky kids who answered trivia questions from the film. Sang Im and I tried not to die laughing at the spectacle.
